Enhancing Surgical Safety in Liver Procedures with Advanced Haemostats – Hepatitis Day 2025
World Hepatitis Day 2025, observed on 28 July, raises awareness about viral hepatitis, a critical global health challenge that led to 1.3 million deaths from chronic hepatitis B and C worldwide. ¹
These infections often progress to advanced liver disease and liver cancer, requiring complex surgical interventions such as hepatectomy, liver resections, or transplants. One of the major challenges during these procedures is controlling bleeding, as the liver’s dense vascular structure makes haemostasis particularly difficult.
Rapid and effective bleeding control is essential to minimize blood loss and ensure better surgical outcomes. While conventional techniques like manual pressure, suturing, ligation, clipping, and cauterization are commonly used, they may not always be sufficient or feasible in every case. In such cases, advanced hemostatic agents such as SURGISPON®, FLOGEL®, and SurgiORC®play a crucial role in managing bleeding efficiently and safely during these critical procedures.
- SURGISPON®: Quick-acting Absorbable Hemostatic Gelatin Sponge
It is a quick and effectively controls bleeding. It is non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-immunogenic, non-pyrogenic, and gamma-sterilized, requiring no resterilization or special storage. Its uniform porosity ensures effective hemostasis.
Why use SURGISPON®

Clinical Evidence:
Evaluated the safety and efficacy of tract embolization with gelatin sponge strips after percutaneous transhepatic poral vein access.Between September 2017 and February 2024, 100 patients (61 men, 39 women) underwent 105 percutaneous transhepatic portal vein interventions, including 71 pre-hepatectomy embolizations, 27 post-transplant venoplasties or stent placements, and 7 other procedures.Gelatin sponge strips were used after 6–8 Fr sheath removal, with no bleeding observed. Minor, non-significant portal vein thrombosis occurred in 4 cases, with no clear association to the sponge or sheath. The technique proved safe and effective for bleeding prevention.2
- FLOGEL®: Flowable Gelatin Haemostatic Matrix for Hard-to-reach Bleeding Sites
It isan off-white, flowable gelatin haemostatic matrix made from absorbable sponge and prefilled in a syringe It is designed for bleeding control in tight, irregular, and hard-to-reach surgical sites.Maintains consistent viscosity after mixing with saline or thrombin; available in 5 ml, 6 ml, 8 ml, and 10 ml kits.
Why use FLOGEL®:

Clinical Evidence:
This prospective study assessed 83 hepatectomy patients where Floseal® was applied to 87 bleeding sites, graded using the Validated Intraoperative Bleeding (VIBe) Scale. Complete hemostasis was achieved in all cases. A 2-minute initial application succeeded in 100% of VIBe grade 1, 76% of grade 2, 20% of grade 3, and none of grade 4 cases. No bleeding-related complications were observed, supporting Floseal® as a safe and effective haemostatic agent for liver resections.3

- Surgi-ORC®: Plant-Based Hemostatic Solution (Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose)
It is a sterile, plant-based absorbable haemostat made of oxidized regenerated cellulose (polyoxyan hydro glucuronic acid). It offers high stability and superior fluid absorption and can be cut into desired sizes for surgical procedures.
Variants for procedure:
Surgi-ORC ORIGINAL-A flexible, drapable haemostatic dressing for effective surgical use.
Surgi-ORC KNIT-Suture-friendly and suitable for bleeding control in laparoscopic and transplant surgeries.
Why use Surgi-ORC®:

Clinical Evidence:
In a randomized trial of 40 hepatectomy patients, prophylactic application of oxidized regeneratedcellulose (ORC) significantly reduced postoperative drainagein ORC group compared with the control group(406.9 ± 308.1 mlvs. 627.0 ± 301.6 ml; p=0.028), enhanced hemostasis, and minimized liver resection-related complications, highlighting its effectiveness in improving surgical outcomes.4
Promoting Liver Health for a Better Future
On World Hepatitis Day 2025, let’s emphasize the importance of liver health by advocating for:
- Awareness & early detection of hepatitis to prevent liver complications.
- Preventive care in chronic liver disease5
- Encouraging healthy lifestyle habits to protect and support liver function.
- Advancing hemostatic solutions for safer liver surgeries and improved patient outcomes.
At Aegis Lifesciences, we are committed to transforming liver care with surgical solutions that support healthcare professionals in managing complex hepatic challenges. This World Hepatitis Day, let’s work together to raise awareness, drive advancements in treatment, and empower patients with better care for a healthier future.
